Description
Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a plant with a long history in Europe and Western Asia. It thrives in moist grasslands, along riverbanks and in salty coastal areas, where its soft, grey-green leaves and pale blossoms give it a striking, almost velvety appearance. The plant is part of the rich mallow family, which also includes malva and marshmallow.
Marshmallow root was already used in ancient times — not as modern medicine, but as part of traditional lifestyles, folk cuisine and herbal culture. Ancient sources describe how marshmallow root was used in syrups, local specialities, sweet preparations and hot drinks intended to provide comfort and soothing relief. In various cultures, the plant was regarded as a symbol of soothing, care and domestic tranquillity.
In terms of taste, marshmallow root has a natural mild sweetness and a full, soft mouthfeel that comes through particularly well in warm infusions.
