Star anise – organic spices

Star anise is beautiful to look at and delicious to smell. The star-shaped fruits have a sweet, spicy flavour reminiscent of aniseed.

Widely used as a flavouring in spice and tea blends, especially in winter and oriental combinations.

Star anise has various applications in traditional and contemporary Asian herbal medicine, although we expressly make no claims about its actual effects and effectiveness.

Description

Star anise (Illicium verum) is the dried fruit of an evergreen tree from the magnolia family (Schisandraceae), originally native to southern China and Vietnam. The star-shaped fruit develops from a fragrant flower and contains a shiny, aromatic seed in each point.

Star anise has been used for centuries in both cooking and aromatic beverages.

The flavour is full, warm and slightly liquorice-like, and combines well with spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves and turmeric. In countless chai and spice blends, star anise forms the round, fragrant base that adds warmth and depth. Also delicious in winter infusions, mulled wine and hot chocolate.
