Honingbos, Honeybush, or Heuningbos in Afrikaans, is made from the above-ground parts of plants from the Cyclopia family that grow on the South African Cape. The plants are so named because the flowers smell like honey. The herb tastes similar to rooibos, but is fuller and sweeter.
Honeybush contains pinitol, a modified sugar. Pinitol is attracting interest as a cough suppressant and possibly also as a blood sugar reducer. For this reason, honeybush is also being investigated as a natural medicine in the treatment of diabetes.
