Description
Devil's claw (Harpagophytum) is a characteristic plant from the dry regions of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. The plant is recognisable by its striking fruit with hook-shaped 'claws', but it is the tuberous root that is traditionally dried and used for herbal infusions.
The taste of devil's claw root is robust and earthy, with a subtle bitter note. This makes it an ideal choice for those who love powerful, natural herbal infusions. Drunk pure, the character of the root comes through most strongly, but the herb also combines well with milder flavours such as mint or lemon verbena.
Devil's claw has a long history of use in traditional African herbal culture, where the bitter root had a permanent place in various rituals and preparations. Today, it is mainly valued as an authentic, intense herb for a full-bodied, natural infusion.
