Description
Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), also known as queen's herb, is an elegant, perennial riverside plant that occurs naturally in wet grasslands, stream banks and marshy areas. The plant is recognisable by its large, feathery leaves and its panicles of creamy white, strikingly fragrant flowers that appear in midsummer.
In traditional herbal cultures within Europe, meadowsweet has been valued for centuries for its pleasant aroma and balance of fresh and soft notes. Its soft, slightly floral scent can even be found in old folk tales and was sometimes used to naturally perfume rooms.
Both leaves and flower parts are used to make an infusion. The result is a mildly aromatic, gentle herbal tea with a natural nuance that combines well with other herbs in blends.
Please note: due to the salicylates in meadowsweet, similar to those in aspirin, it is advisable to exercise caution when using it, especially if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates.
