Juniper berries – crushed – organic spices

Juniper berries have a distinctive, spicy flavour with an unmistakable undertone of pine forests. The juniper berry is not actually a berry. It is the dried, ripe catkin that grows from the flower of the juniper bush. It takes three years for this catkin to ripen and change colour.
We offer the crushed variety in our range, as this form releases its essential oils 1,000 times better into boiling water or wherever the berry is used.

Juniper berries have various applications in traditional European herbal medicine, but we make no claims about their actual effects and effectiveness.

Description

Juniper (Juniperus communis) is one of the oldest aromatic botanicals in Europe and has played an important role in culinary, artisanal and herbal traditions for centuries. The plant grows on sunny heaths, forest edges and mountainous areas and is known for its fragrant, blue-black cones that only reach full maturity after several years. The 'berry' of the juniper is actually a woody, fused cone of the female inflorescence. During the ripening process, it develops a complex aroma: warm, resinous, spicy, slightly citrusy and clearly recognisable by its pine forest undertones. It is precisely this aromatic profile that makes juniper popular in both cooking and herbal infusions. In botanical tea or herbal blends, juniper berries provide a warm, round, slightly fresh spiciness that combines well with herbs such as rosemary, lemon peel, bay leaf, fennel, cinnamon and ginger.
