Description
Heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a characteristic plant of heathlands and sandy soils, recognisable by its fine twigs and small lilac-purple flowers. The plant has been used for centuries in various European traditions, both as a simple household herb and for ritual applications in rural areas.
In herbal tea, heather is known for its mild, slightly floral and subtly earthy flavour, which is why it is often added to make an infusion softer and rounder. Both the flowering tops and the leaves are dried and used for hot infusions or as an attractive decorative component in tea blends.
In the traditional herbal culture of Northern and Western Europe, heather was associated with tranquillity and purification, among other things, but these are historical uses without any statement about actual efficacy or effectiveness. Modern applications focus mainly on the flavour and natural appearance of the herb.
Heather is therefore primarily a mild, aromatic and visually appealing ingredient for tea blends or a simple infusion on its own.
