Description
Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is a traditionally beloved plant in European herbalism and has been valued for centuries for its gentle, floral character. The bright yellow and orange petals give infusions a warm appearance and a mild, somewhat earthy flavour.
This product consists of a natural blend of whole dried flowers with calyx, loose petals and individual calyxes – exactly as marigold is traditionally dried and sorted.
Botanical background
Marigold belongs to the composite family (Asteraceae). The plant is known for its striking round flower heads that open at sunrise. Because of this rhythmic 'following of the light', the plant was given the name Calendula in ancient herbals, derived from calendae, the Latin word for 'the first day of the month', because it can bloom almost all year round.
Cultural and traditional uses
In European folk culture, marigold was used as a culinary and dye plant, and sometimes even as a substitute for saffron in dishes. In tea, it was particularly appreciated for its mild flavour and decorative value.
